iPad Hits Canada

Our inspired field reporter and show notes taker Bruce Clarke www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke has a report of his iPad experience to share.

I finally got my hands on an iPad up here in Canada although Apple had shipping problems with FedEx and my pre-order didn’t deliver on the launch day so I had to pick it up the next day. I’ve heard rumours that Apple might be offering some sort of an apology credit to those who didn’t get their pre-orders on launch day. My wife also wanted one for her birthday so I walked into our newest Apple store that just opened on iPad launch day and picked up a 3G model in about 3 minutes. The store was busy but it looked like they had plenty of stock in all models and this was about 3 hours after the store opened.

Interestingly enough, I ordered the Apple case and it still hasn’t shipped and they actually used UPS express to ship me my Roger’s SIM card which only cost $0.20 to begin with. That was the only thing that arrived on time but was useless without the iPad. In terms of data plans up here, Roger’s offers 2 plans – $15 per month for 250 MB and $35 per month for 5GB. When they were taking pre-orders, there was a 3rd plan for existing iPhone customers for 5GB for only $20 but it looks like they removed that option.

That’s all from up north.

The iPad Lands Overseas

Yesterday, people in Japan, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, the UK and Canada could get their hands on the 9.7 inch wonder known as the iPad.

Many international Apple stores reported long waiting lines, as people queued up to get one of the first iPads sold outside the USA.

On Wednesday, Apple overtook Microsoft as the world’s biggest tech company – based on market value. I guess in the end it means that the iPad wasn’t such a #Fail after all.

PadPundit Episode 8

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode 8 of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy talk about the international release of the 3G iPad.

iPad International Release

On May 28th, the iPad was finally released in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. This offers a wider audience for developers who must consider making their applications available in multiple languages. Long lines were reported in most countries and Andy notes that it’s still difficult to get a hold of 3G models of the iPad.

Competition to the iPad

Just like we’ve seen with the iPhone, we are only now starting to see some worthy competitors come onto the market to compete against the iPhone and this has pushed Apple to improve the iPhone. Scott and Andy are both looking forward to competition in the iPad space from companies like Google with their Android OS and as soon as a worthy competitor comes out, both Scott and Andy will check it out.

Laptop Replacement?

Scott has noticed that since he got his iPad, he’s finding more and more things that he can do with it that he used to do with his laptop. As a portfolio device, Scott has had a 100% close rate when using it to show clients his photography portfolio. Andy has also found many use cases for the iPad that he would previously use a laptop for.

News

On Wednesday, Apple surpassed Microsoft in terms of market cap. Scott feels that they got their by innovating. Microsoft also innovates but they focus on B2B so Scott thinks that sometimes hurts the adoption of their products by consumers.

Ultimate SleeveCase (with leather trim) Mini Review

One thing’s for sure, most iPad owners will want some sort of case. They may want even more than one, depending on how they might use the device. Here at PadPundit.com we’ve looked at about a dozen iPad cases and the Ultimate SleeveCase is hands down my favorite of all of them.

The product is made in San Francisco by Waterfield Designs. It is a portfolio-style case that offers 360 degree protection that seals with a Velcro strip. It has a convenient side pocket for accessories, and for those who care about such things, it’s made in the U.S.A.

This is not only one of the sturdier and better built cases I’ve tried, but it’s also the best looking in my opinion. While at my age and station in life, I am rarely a slave to fashion, even horizontally-challenged old guys don’t mind looking stylish.

There’s something different about the cases from Waterfield Designs. They seem to really put their heart and soul into their products. The workmanship on this case is simply top notch.

You can order this case with the standard nylon bottom ($55) or the soft leather bottom ($59)

I like the fact that the iPad fits snugly into the SleeveCase, but not so snug that you have to fistfight the thing out of the case.

If you’re the sort of person who prefers to work FROM the case rather than taking the iPad OUT of the case, the Ultimate SleeveCase isn’t for you. But if you don’t mind taking the iPad out of the case to work, then this is one case that I highly recommend.

We’ve been expecting this - Apple has launched a new iPad TV commercial. The commercial asks the question – “What is iPad?” The spot focuses on the myriad of ways you can choose to use iPad and suggests, “There’s no right way or wrong way.”

iPad Sales Soaring – Units in Short Supply

Yahoo News and Fortune Magazine are reporting that iPads are in short supply.

Piper Jaffray called 50 Apple stores and found a “very limited” supply of iPads:

An analyst at RBC Capital Markets says Apple is selling more than 800,000 iPads a month.

PadPundit contacted Apple Stores in Las Vegas, Seattle, & New York and found no iPads for sale.

Apple iPads Can Now Be Bought With Cash

Apple recently came under attack (what’s new?) for not accepting cash for iPads. The policy is similar to the one that Apple employed when the iPhone was initially sold. Foreign buyers were flooding Apple stores with cash to buy iPhones for sale in unapproved markets. To reduce this practice, and the liability that it could bring Apple, Apple Stores stopped accepting cash.

Apple suspected the same thing could happen with iPads so they instituted the same policy for iPads. A woman named Diane Campbell complained that she couldn’t buy an iPad with cash and because she was complaining about Apple, became a media darling.

Apple reconsidered the policy. Some of the iPad blogs, without any proof or attribution are claiming that Apple changed its policy because of the negative press. There’s not a shred of proof that’s true. It very well could be, but we really don’t know why they changed the policy. PadPundit’s calls to Apple’s PR department have gone unreturned.

In any event, the policy is changed. It will be interesting to see if it leads to more pirated iPads selling outside the USA. My personal opinion is that Apple changed the policy since it’s getting so close to delivering legitimate iPads outside the USA anyway.

Keeping Your iPad Safe – Use A Passcode

We received a question from a PadPundit podcast listener named Joel that I want to answer on the website. Joel wants to know why he should lock his iPad and how to do it.

I think everyone should lock their iPad when not in use. If the iPad is lost or stolen, locking it prevents a third party from accessing your private information like passwords, etc. It also adds an incentive for someone to return a lost iPad to you, since it’s no good to them locked.

It’s easy to lock your iPad. This process only takes a few seconds. Go to “Settings“, “General” and then “Passcode Lock.“ Enter in a four-digit number that you can easily remember. Now, when your iPad goes to sleep, you shut it down or turn it completely off, it will require the passcode to unlock it for use.

Three Things You Might Not Have Known About Your iPad

1. Your iPad’s HOME button will automatically take you to the HOME screen but did you know you can change that? Simply go to GENERAL – HOME and set it to bring up a search or your iPod app.

2. If you want to yell at someone in all caps, just double tap on either of the SHIFT keys and you’ll enable CAPS LOCK.

3. You can add a total of six apps to your iPad DOCK. While the unit ships with four apps in the Dock, you can press and hold any Home Screen icon until it wobbles. Then drag it to the dock.

More on iPad WiFi Issues

Apple has updated its Knowledge Base article about iPad WIFI issues – you can read their post on the Apple site – http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3304

The most important update to their site? This sentence – “Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.”

This implies that Apple has some role to play in solving the problem and it’s not just those of us with certain routers who cause the problem.
