Welcome to second episode of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy answer some listener questions and talk about the pre-orders for the iPad
Discussion
Apple announced that it will ship the iPad on April 3rd in the US and officially started taking pre-orders last week. Both Scott and Andy have pre-ordered their iPads. Here is what they each ordered:
Andy: 64 GB 3G model with no accessories. The 3G model won’t come out until 30 days after the WiFi model is launched, however Andy is also fairly confident that he will also be getting a review unit from Apple on the launch date. Andy decided to go with the 3G model because he is writing a book about it and wants to test out the GPS features. If he was not writing a book, he would have gone for the 32 GB WiFi model.
Scott: 3 x 64 GB models with all the bells and whistles. One is for Scott, one is for a giveaway, and one is for a member of his staff. The only accessories he didn’t order were the wireless keyboard because he has one already and the SD card reader because it wasn’t available for pre-order.
Questions
Exchange Support on the iPad
Q: Eric would like to know if the iPad will support Exchange email, just like the iPhone?
A: Yes, in fact it will support MobileMe, Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL, and most industry standard IMAP and POP email services. Find out more about email on the iPad.
ePub Document Support
Q: Do you think the iPad will support the ePub documents?
A: Yes and no. iBooks does support arbitrary eBook files however it does not make mention of DRM. If it is unlocked, unprotected then it should work just fine. If it’s secured content from Sony, then it probably won’t.
Wireless Synching
Q: Will the iPad support wireless synching?
A: Unknown but at this time it is unlikely given that the iPhone doesn’t support it. However with the 4.0 OS coming soon, anything is possible.
