Expedited Shipping Not Necessary

I wondered how this would pan out. I just received the following email from Apple:

“To Our Valued Apple Customer:

Thank you for your recent Apple iPad purchase.

Our records indicate that when you placed your iPad pre-order, you
chose to pay for expedited shipping.

Expedited shipping is not necessary to ensure delivery. Apple has
processed a refund for the shipping charge on your order. Please
contact your card-issuing bank for information on when the credit
will be posted to your account.

Your iPad will deliver on April 3rd in the areas where UPS offers
Saturday delivery.

Sincerely,
The Apple Store Team”

iPad Shipping Notices Starting To Show Up Across the USA

On March 12, I ordered two iPads. Today I got the shipping notice for both.

Apple and UPS (thank goodness it’s not FedEx) say the package is on the way:

SHENZHEN, CN

I’m not sure how paying for expedited shipping helped me since Apple’s notice says the iPad will arrive on April 3, but at least I know the units are on the way. I ordered four more a week later. It will be interesting to see when they are shipped.

I have received email from Ohio, New York and Florida saying others have also received their notices.

iPad Edumacation – The Right Tool For The Job

Yesterday, some folks on Twitter were doing their best to prove that they don’t understand where the iPad fits into the universe.

They were complaining that the iPad won’t be beefy enough to run a full-fledged photo editing program like Aperture. (If Apple created Aperture Lite for the iPad then it might work.) But that line of thinking misses the point. You have to pick the right tool for the job.

Heavy-duty RAW photo processing and photo editing should be done on a laptop or a desktop with lots of horsepower – not the iPad.

Yes the iPad is convenient and it would be cool and all that but I also wish that I had a point and shoot with all the power and features of my Nikon D3s.

Back to my point – you need the right tool for the job. I’d no more shoot a wedding with a point and shoot over a DSLR than I would process photos with an iPad over my maxed out, 17-inch, MacBook Pro.

New Poll Question – What’s the iPad’s Killer App?

What will be the iPad’s killer app? You can find the poll on the right side of the PadPundit.com home page.

Our last poll had to do with whether or not you wanted a 3G or a WIFI edition of the iPad. At a rate of about two to one, you said you want the WIFI edition.

Thanks for participating.

PadPundit Episode 3

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to the third episode of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, it’s the Karnack edition where Scott and Andy will answer some listener questions for a product that doesn’t exist yet.

Questions

Question 1 – Simm Card Sharing with the iPad
Jarrod from Birmingham AL writes: Would I be able to share my simm card with my iPad and use my iPhone’s 3g connection?

Andy: The simple answer is no. The simm card in the iPad is a different sized simm card than the iPhone uses. Read the full post »

Kindle & iPad Living in Harmony?

Not quite – but Wired has an interesting piece on the Kindle APP for iPad.

Perhaps Amazon realizes the Kindle itself is old news? Notice the COLOR image. Ummm the Kindle can’t display color images so this means Amazon is effectively working on this exclusively for the iPad/iPod Touch.

Personally I am glad to see this. More e-books to choose from on the Kindle is a good thing. How will Apple react?

iPad Q&A – External Storage

Constance Westfall contacted the PadPundit to ask this question. “Since ipad will come with a sd/ USB adapter will I be able to connect a external harddrive for added storage of content?”

Here’s our best guess answer….

Yes you will be able to connect the hard drive via the USB accessory port, but whether or not you will be able to read and write directly from the drive remains to be seen.

It’s unlikely that the iPad will support this feature right out of the box, unless that is there is a major upgrade to the iPhone OS that supports it before the iPad ships.

Now there are workarounds. It seems that files which you store on your external HDD and which are housed in iTunes may be accessible. Also, there is an existing application called Air Video that allows you to access iTunes content.

As with all discussions of the iPad at this point – if there is enough demand, developers will find a way around many of the device’s initial limitations.

If you’re a developer and you either do have a product that supports read/write capability to external devices from the iPad or you plan to build one, please contact us at padpundit@me.com.

Thanks for the question constance.

PadPundit Episode 2

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to second episode of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy answer some listener questions and talk about the pre-orders for the iPad

Discussion
Apple announced that it will ship the iPad on April 3rd in the US and officially started taking pre-orders last week. Both Scott and Andy have pre-ordered their iPads. Here is what they each ordered:

Andy: 64 GB 3G model with no accessories. The 3G model won’t come out until 30 days after the WiFi model is launched, however Andy is also fairly confident that he will also be getting a review unit from Apple on the launch date. Andy decided to go with the 3G model because he is writing a book about it and wants to test out the GPS features. If he was not writing a book, he would have gone for the 32 GB WiFi model.

Scott: 3 x 64 GB models with all the bells and whistles. One is for Scott, one is for a giveaway, and one is for a member of his staff. The only accessories he didn’t order were the wireless keyboard because he has one already and the SD card reader because it wasn’t available for pre-order.

Questions

Exchange Support on the iPad
Q: Eric would like to know if the iPad will support Exchange email, just like the iPhone?

A: Yes, in fact it will support MobileMe, Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL, and most industry standard IMAP and POP email services. Find out more about email on the iPad.

ePub Document Support
Q: Do you think the iPad will support the ePub documents?

A: Yes and no. iBooks does support arbitrary eBook files however it does not make mention of DRM. If it is unlocked, unprotected then it should work just fine. If it’s secured content from Sony, then it probably won’t.

Wireless Synching
Q: Will the iPad support wireless synching?

A: Unknown but at this time it is unlikely given that the iPhone doesn’t support it. However with the 4.0 OS coming soon, anything is possible.
