PadPundit Episode 10

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode 10 of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy catch up with the latest iPad news and discuss the various photography applications that are available for the iPad.

iOS 4 for the iPad

Scott and Andy discuss the status of iOS 4 for the iPad and wonder why there hasn’t been much news about it. The only thing Apple is saying is that it will be available sometime in the fall. Scott wasn’t too interested in multi-taksing on the iPhone but really wants the multi-tasking feature on the iPad.

iPad for Photography

Scott and Andy are both using the camera connection kit in the field to view their photos on the beautiful iPad screen. Andy really likes being able to sort and pick images while he’s in the field rather than waiting until he gets back to his main computer. As a portfolio device, Scott really likes being able to hand the iPad to people and letting them flip through the photos at their own pace. It has resulted in an increase in sales for his photography. Scott is really excited about the new Mamiya RZ33 WiFi tethered mode which will allow photographers to shoot and view their photos on an iPad. Sure it’s an $18,000 camera today but Scott thinks we’ll see this in $500 cameras very soon.

In terms of photo applications, Scott would like to see a version of iPhoto for the iPad. Scott is also working with some photographers to develop an iPad with all the applications removed that can be used as a wedding album. He has also seen many photographers using the iPad as their portfolio device to get business. Gourmet magazine is also being reborn as an iPad magazine so that gets photographers back in the game shooting for the digital version of the magazine.

New Applications

There are more and more applications appearing on the iPad including DC Comics. YouTube has also been updated to fully support the iPad. The iPad is putting downward pressure on devices like the Nook and the Kindle and both Scott and Andy are eager to see competitors to the iPad start to step up their game to keep Apple on their toes and in development mode.

PadPundit Episode 9

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode 9 of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy talk about WWDC and iOS 4.0.

World Wide Developer’s Conference

Andy recently attended the WWDC Conference where the new iPhone was announced. Andy was surprised at the lack of announcements around the iPad at WWDC other than talking about iBooks. Many developers feel that the iPad represents a great opportunity for their applications. Everyone at WWDC was sporting an iPad so Andy was glad he had his custom iPad skin on his.

Scott thinks that with Morgan Stanley’s prediction of Apple selling 10 Million iPads, then there are lots of opportunities for developers. Andy still thinks that since developers do have to learn a unique set of tools for each platform whether it be WebOS, Android, iPhone, or for Windows Phone 7, they really have to be committed to their choice. Scott has invested in some iPad applications and thinks that these numbers are encouraging and will only get better.

Andy still thinks there are still some challenges in terms of developers having their applications accepted into the app store and the lack of clear direction on what will cause an application to be rejected.

Scott thinks that is the popular opinion but the facts are that most applications are accepted very quickly and without issue. He sees it as no different than the rest of the distribution world. He does wish the guidelines were clearer. Based on his experiences with Android based devices, Scott doesn’t think they will take off or nail the end-to-end integration as well as Apple does.

Is Apple Abandoning the Computer Space?

Scott asks Andy if he thinks that Apple is now just a mobile company and have moved out of the computer space? Andy doesn’t think they have moved out of the computer space but was surprised when there were no sessions on Mac OS. That might have been because they didn’t release a new version of the OS. Scott wonders if they are moving out of the computer space because there were none of the usual announcements at WWDC with regards to new MacBooks, Mac Pros or updates to Mac OS.

iOS 4 Update & WWDC Surprises

Andy thinks that many of the features of iOS 4 makes the iPhone feel more like an iPad nano (e.g being able use a mechanical keyboard with the iPhone, etc). Scott predicts that when iOS 4 for the iPad is launched this fall, it will be launched with a new model of the iPad. In terms of surprises at WWDC, there really wasn’t much in the way of announcements that weren’t expected or were surprising. The only big surprise was the quality of the camera and the presence of iMovie.

PadPundit Episode 8

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode 8 of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy talk about the international release of the 3G iPad.

iPad International Release

On May 28th, the iPad was finally released in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. This offers a wider audience for developers who must consider making their applications available in multiple languages. Long lines were reported in most countries and Andy notes that it’s still difficult to get a hold of 3G models of the iPad.

Competition to the iPad

Just like we’ve seen with the iPhone, we are only now starting to see some worthy competitors come onto the market to compete against the iPhone and this has pushed Apple to improve the iPhone. Scott and Andy are both looking forward to competition in the iPad space from companies like Google with their Android OS and as soon as a worthy competitor comes out, both Scott and Andy will check it out.

Laptop Replacement?

Scott has noticed that since he got his iPad, he’s finding more and more things that he can do with it that he used to do with his laptop. As a portfolio device, Scott has had a 100% close rate when using it to show clients his photography portfolio. Andy has also found many use cases for the iPad that he would previously use a laptop for.

News

On Wednesday, Apple surpassed Microsoft in terms of market cap. Scott feels that they got their by innovating. Microsoft also innovates but they focus on B2B so Scott thinks that sometimes hurts the adoption of their products by consumers.

PadPundit Episode 7

Host: Scott Bourne (www.scottbourne.com or www.twitter.com/scottbourne) & Andy Ihnatko (www.cwob.com or www.twitter.com/ihnatko)

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode 7 of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy talk about the release of the 3G iPad and Andy’s recent Mac Mania cruise to Bermuda.

iPad for Travel

Andy really enjoyed having his iPad with him on the cruise ship. It was a great tool for media consumption and for creating his presentations. Using the 3G model, Andy also enjoyed using a beta of GPS application to track where he was on the cruise. Andy also took advantage of the camera connection kit to download and view his photos. Scott spent the week in Las Vegas for fun and wound up traveling without his laptop for the first time in many years and was able to do at least 90% of the things he would normally need a laptop for on the iPad. Andy did experience some limitations as far as moving and working with keynote presentations on the iPad so having a laptop was still need in certain situations.

Scott did bring the keyboard dock with him and found at times he was missing using a mouse. Andy thinks that it will still take a few months of time and hands-on experience for developers to release a great word processing document that will take full advantage of the iPad and make the need for a mouse less. One other limitation that both Andy and Scott have encountered is viewing movies or iBooks on the glossy screen in bright lighting conditions. Andy tried his 3G version briefly in the car but found glare to be an issue. Scott wonders if a matte screen might be an available option for the next release of the iPad. Despite the glare issues in direct sunlight, both Scott and Andy really enjoy using the Kindle application on the iPad.

LuLu for iBooks

LuLu has been certified to do stuff for the iBookstore so Scott sees that there will be more independent paths onto the bookstore.

Show notes by Bruce Clarke (www.momentsindigital.com or www.twitter.com/bruceclarke)

Welcome to Episode 5 of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy bask in the glow having had the iPad for a few weeks.

WiFi Issue

The iPad is having an issue recognizing some dual-band network routers and is having some difficulties rejoining remembered networks. You can read more about these WiFi issues by reading this post on Padpundit. Scott also found that he had less problems if he turned off the iPad using the top power button.

Presenting on the iPad with Keynote

Scott recently presented at NAB and did his presentations entirely from the iPad using Keynote. He’s a little less excited after having used it because he had problems copying over keynote presentations that he created on his laptop. Scott also had issues getting the VGA adaptor to work. Scott had to connect the dongle to the VGA projector first and then connected it to the iPad to get it to work properly. Scott believes that he could travel with just this device and bluetooth keyboard.

Andy also found out that you can’t play rented video content on any big screen or any projector by connecting to the iPad with the VGA dongle. Andy also feels that they need to improve the integration between Keynote for the iPad and Keynote for the Mac. He was very disappointed to discover that his fonts didn’t come over.

Traveling with the iPad

Both Scott and Andy recently traveled with the iPad and share their experiences on going through security. In some cases they were allowed to leave it in their case but in others they had to take it out. Having to take it out of your bag is likely to due to a mixture of curiosity and security officials being unsure about these new devices. For more information on traveling with your iPad (and for some comic relief) check out what the TSA have to say about traveling with devices like the iPad. For now, Scott is just going to play it safe and just treat it like a laptop and take it out of his case when going through security.

Scott’s iPad Application

Scott has an application called Avian Wallpaper which allows you to use some of Scott’s famous bird images for your wallpaper. The real benefit of this application is that it is a proof of concept that the iPad offers a new place for creative’s to generate revenue. Not only did it make some of Scott’s photography more accessible to people but Scott was also contacted by a company who is interested in licensing some of his images for commercial work proving that the more ways you can get your work out there the better.

Andy is also working on some short stories that he hopes to release soon and have available in the iBook store.

First Impressions

Screen: Overall first impressions have been great. For Scott, the iPad is the greatest Scrabble device ever invented :) . Scott loves the screen and has been busy showing off his portfolio on it. Andy is also enjoying the screen and thinks his photos look great on it as well. Andy thinks that part of that may have to do with the form factor. Read the full post »

Welcome to second episode of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy answer some listener questions and talk about the pre-orders for the iPad

Discussion
Apple announced that it will ship the iPad on April 3rd in the US and officially started taking pre-orders last week. Both Scott and Andy have pre-ordered their iPads. Here is what they each ordered:

Andy: 64 GB 3G model with no accessories. The 3G model won’t come out until 30 days after the WiFi model is launched, however Andy is also fairly confident that he will also be getting a review unit from Apple on the launch date. Andy decided to go with the 3G model because he is writing a book about it and wants to test out the GPS features. If he was not writing a book, he would have gone for the 32 GB WiFi model.

Scott: 3 x 64 GB models with all the bells and whistles. One is for Scott, one is for a giveaway, and one is for a member of his staff. The only accessories he didn’t order were the wireless keyboard because he has one already and the SD card reader because it wasn’t available for pre-order.

Questions

Exchange Support on the iPad
Q: Eric would like to know if the iPad will support Exchange email, just like the iPhone?

A: Yes, in fact it will support MobileMe, Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL, and most industry standard IMAP and POP email services. Find out more about email on the iPad.

ePub Document Support
Q: Do you think the iPad will support the ePub documents?

A: Yes and no. iBooks does support arbitrary eBook files however it does not make mention of DRM. If it is unlocked, unprotected then it should work just fine. If it’s secured content from Sony, then it probably won’t.

Wireless Synching
Q: Will the iPad support wireless synching?

A: Unknown but at this time it is unlikely given that the iPhone doesn’t support it. However with the 4.0 OS coming soon, anything is possible.

Welcome to inaugural episode of PadPundit with your hosts Scott Bourne and Andy Ihnatko. PadPundit is the show devoted to all things iPad and other worthy entrants into the tablet computing category. This week, Scott and Andy share their initial impressions of the iPad.

Discussion
Andy was at the launch event and actually had a chance to touch the device so Scott has some questions for Andy.

1. Screen Quality
The screen is excellent. Lots of contrast and punchy. Andy spoke with a photographer who had no problems with screen and is looking forward to using the device as a portable portfolio. When it comes to reading, while the specs for eInk are better than the iPad, I think that it’s a push due to the backlit display and anti-aliasing. Apple’s OS also does a great job of typography.

2. How about the refresh? On the Kindle for example, moving from page to page is slow.
It’s an LCD display and the interface is very fluid and liquid. It really feels like you’re working with paper pages. As an e-reader, I’m not sure anything will compete with the iPad. Read the full post »
